MARK HANNON

I’ve been involved in Art and Design throughout my life... from roots in creating primary school comics, secondary school influences from my art teacher father, through to an Honours degree in Scientific and Technical Graphics (including a 1st for Thesis: 'The use of Cartoons in Education").

My professional life has been spent shared between broadcast TV graphics/animation, commercial illustration and painting.

My style of work and list of clients are as varied as my subject matter and chosen media...ranging from acrylics, watercolour, charcoal, and pen and ink. That may explain my love of variety in my work.

I have a cartoonist’s interest in politics and current affairs and enjoy the possibilities of blending art with humour to encapsulate a concept in some quirky way.

Many of the paintings reference music, world affairs and politics, and you might spot the influence of the French painter, Magritte, in some of them. Although some obviously have messages, there are some that come under the nonsensical/surrealist/humorous banner… or just a simple daft play on words...think Van Morrison in a Morrison’s van!

I’ve been very fortunate to have had some of my recent acrylic paintings (below) selected for exhibitions in various National Art Societies in the past few years...

A portrait of a friend that was shortlisted for

the ‘New English Art Club’ 2024 Exhibition

Two paintings were selected for and exhibited at

'The Artist Magazine’ 2024 Annual Exhibition -

Patchings Art Festival, Nottingham.

The self portrait (Lost Mojo) was awarded the

"Rosemary & Co." prize

at the exhibition.

Two paintings were selected for 'The Artist Magazine’ 2023

Annual Exhibition at Patchings Art Festival, Nottingham.

The "Cole/coal Porter" painting was selected and exhibited

at the exhibition.

'The Boot" was selected for the Online version of the

Gallery exhibition, as 'highly commended'.

Two paintings were selected and exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists Exhibition (2021 and 2022), at the Mall Galleries, London.

The painting selected in 2022 was ‘Boris Boris’, depicting Boris Johnson standing on huge pork pies with ‘Trust Me’ written behind him.

The painting chosen in 2021 was of three people from three generations sitting silently on a bench in a street in Glasgow as the country emerged from lockdown.

2022-23 Exhibition:
"Deep and Meaningless"

Around 15 original works and a selection of prints.

The exhibition was called ‘Deep and Meaningless’ reflecting the surreal, satirical, and humorous nature of the work, which can often at the same time be thought-provoking.
